Jim and I met in 1990 in a high school creative writing class. I was
a sophomore and Jim was a senior. Our first exchange went like this:
Jim [to the ever-quiet Tiffany]: Don't you ever say anything???
Tiffany [as she smiled and resolved to hate him forever]: Yes
Then, one late afternoon in October, I was leaving school and passed
by Jim sitting outside at a picnic table. We spoke briefly, and I told him
that I was going away to Washington, D.C. with my family for a week. He
said, "We'll miss you," in the sweetest possible way and I
suddenly realized -- not only did I not hate him, but I actually liked
him.
But we were both very shy, so we spent most of that year sneaking
peeks at one another across the classroom and exchanging smiles as we
passed in the school hallways. Then, in the last hour of the last school
dance of the year, Jim asked me to dance. I accepted and we danced until
it was time for my mom to pick me up (remember, this was high school). We
were virtually inseparable for the rest of the school year, and I
accompanied him to a huge number of graduation parties. On May 26, after
one of these parties, he officially asked me out, and we have celebrated
that day as our anniversary ever since.
In the years following, we often lived in different states (or
countries!), and spent a lot of time missing each other. Finally, after
years of discussing marriage (apparently unbeknownst to the rest of the
world), we were engaged on September 29, 1996. We set the wedding date for
May 26, 1997, our seventh anniversary, and the planning began...
