Locating a Wedding Site
As soon as we got engaged, we immediately started looking for our wedding site. We had a book called Wonderful Weekends from New York City, which listed many, many country inns, and we drove all around New York and Connecticut, looking at inns. This was one of the nicest wedding planning times we had -- the weekends spent driving down country roads in October and November, when the fall foliage was at its peak, and when we could just dream about what our wedding would be like.

At first we just drove around, judging the inns by their location and their outsides (yes, you can judge an inn by its cover, particularly when it's for your wedding). We soon narrowed our search down to the Litchfield County area of Connecticut, since it was about mid-way between where we lived and where our parents lived, and since it had captivated us with its beauty. We began to go inside our top choices and poke around a bit, asking for wedding packets and talking with the people at the inns. Our search quickly focused in on the Lake Waramaug area in New Preston, where we discovered two particularly interesting inns.

Once we had official appointments with wedding coordinators from each inn, our choice was fairly simple -- we chose the Inn on Lake Waramaug because they were friendly and very willing to customize their traditional wedding packages to fit our needs, and their price fit our budget. The Inn was beautiful and right by the lake, which would allow us to have a gorgeous outdoor ceremony. The Inn's main dining room was too large for our party, but they had a smaller dining room which was perfect for us. This smaller room had two walls of windows, so you could see out toward the lake (before it got dark), and had a very nicely stenciled wood floor. We would have the dinner in the small dining room, and serve hors d'ouvres in the connecting living room. Everyone could circulate throughout the evening between the two rooms, which I liked, and it was all very comfortable, with couches and chairs, much like a house.
