Our Experience
From the beginning, we knew we
wanted my brother John to play a classical guitar solo during the
ceremony (Bach's "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring"). We really
wanted to have live classical music for the ceremony and reception,
but we thought the cost would be prohibitive. Still, we asked John (a
student at Wesleyan University) to do some research for us. Through
the recommendations through John's music professors, we got in touch
with Petar Standaart (a flute teacher at Wesleyan), who was in a
flute, violin and cello trio called Trio da Camera. After hearing
their demo tape, we booked them (only about a month before our
wedding!), and they were wonderful.
Tips on Music
- If you want live musicians, try
contacting local colleges and universities -- students may be
willing to play for a fraction of the cost of professional
musicians. Or, like us, you may be able to book their teachers! :)
- If you're going the DJ route, you
can still look for students -- large universities often have their
own radio stations, so you should be able to find someone with some
experience.
- For a very inexpensive option,
consider simply using your own stereo (or renting some good sound
equipment) and asking a friend to change CDs every once in awhile.
